From Tredu to Kalmar: Pauli and Olli put theory into practice and developed new skills

Olli and Pauli, electrical and automation students from Tredu Vocational College, started their studies-related internship at Kalmar with modest expectations. Neither of them had been familiar with Kalmar's operations before the internship, and Olli even admits that the free lunch offered during the internship was one of the initial incentives for choosing the placement.

However, it soon became clear that Kalmar had much more to offer than just lunch. After an internship period, they continued working at Kalmar as technicians for the summer.

Learning on the job and at school

During their internship, Pauli and Olli pre-prepared battery packs and did electrical preliminary preparations. While they both felt the skills learned at school gave a good foundation, they agreed that the real learning began with the practical tasks. "You always learn more on the job," they state in unison.

Their vocational school qualification project, in particular, provided an opportunity to apply their automation skills in practice. They built a "rack,” which is a simulator for reachstackers.

During their traineeship, Pauli and Olli had the opportunity to complete their forklift license and a lift truck operator course. They value this opportunity as these skills will also be useful in the future.

After the traineeship period, Pauli began working in warehousing, a critical function to keep running during the summer. The work is highly responsible and precise, so his selection for this task also showed great trust from the employer.

Memorable experiences and a great work community

One of Pauli's greatest achievements has been learning to operate the forklift. He has learned to use it in tight spaces and this skill might be valuable also in the future. "My job description has become more versatile after getting the forklift license," he describes.

The work atmosphere at Kalmar receives praise from the summer employees. Shared breaks and a relaxed environment are an important part of their day.

Pauli finds that breaks offer a good moment to clear his head, as operating a forklift requires constant awareness of the surroundings.

Both highlight the support from their colleagues and how they were immediately welcomed into the team. "You get help from everyone if you need it," Olli commends. Jari Roslöf, who guided the students during the internship, receives particular appreciation.

Jari has played a crucial role in their guidance, helping with every question. Also, their supervisor ensures that Pauli and Olli enjoy their tasks, which is important to both of them.

One of the most memorable experiences for both was driving 17-meter-high reachstackers. "You don't get to drive those much anywhere else," Olli laughs. The experience was initially nerve-wracking but unforgettable.

Future plans and advice for others

Pauli and Olli are interested in continuing at Kalmar after their summer jobs before their military service. They also hope to gain experience in field service, for example, in Poland, which a couple previous trainees have had the opportunity to do. They would be keen to see the products' entire journey, as the power units assembled in Finland are sent to Poland to be integrated into the machines.

Pauli and Olli warmly recommend Kalmar for anyone interested. "A nice workplace and a relaxed group make Kalmar a good place to work," they affirm.

For young people interested in Kalmar, Pauli has clear advice: "Whatever the task, it's worth doing it well. That gets you far when you show what you're capable of, and you might get something in return." Olli complements Pauli's advice: "Pretty much everything needed was taught here so there’s no need to stress."
